Transgression and taste
Transgressive art = found in any art which is considered offensive or has shock value. It is an explicit rejection of traditional. Exploring transgressive themes threatens our sense of cleanliness and propriety. Transgressional works share some themes with art that deals with psychological dislocation and mental illness. You can see examples of this relationship, between social transgression and the exploration of mental states relating to illness, included in many of the activities and works of the Dadaists, Surrealists, and Fluxus-related artists.
Dread Scott
Born; 1965 Chicago, Illinois (58)
Awards; Guggenheim Fellowship 2021 and
United States Artists Fellowship in 2020
Dread Scott's Flag. Protesting the current state of America. He exhibited his piece "What Is the Proper Way to Display a U.S. Flag"
A collage hung on a wall features coffins and South Korean students burning the American flag. Below this is a ledger sat opened upon a podium and laying in front of that was an American flag that was spread out neatly on the floor. Viewers where invited to write comments in the ledger but in order to do so must have to walk on top of the flag first. This generated intense controversy where major politicians including George H. W. Bush condemned the exhibit. As a result of this the United States Congress decided to make flag violation illegal in 1989. Although eventually the Supreme Court ruled in favour of Scott's and federal laws over flag desecration and was ruled unconstitutional.
Carolee Schneemann
Born 1939 in Fox Chase, Pennsylvania
Died 2019 (79)
Visual and performance artist
Feminist art, Neo-dada, Fluxus and Happening
In 1964 Carolee Schneemann's performance piece titled "Meet joy" was rehearsed for weeks with untrained participants who engaged in scored and improvised movements. 8 performers including Schneemann's herself crawled and writhed together, playing with partially rotten chicken and fish and decaying meat. One of the main rules for theses unqualified actors was that if you physically connected with some of this meat that's being thrown about then you are to form some kind of connection with it and to treat it like some relation element. According to the artist, by using naked bodies as materials for her art she successfully exposed and confronted a social range of current cultural taboos and repressive conventions.
